Volunteer at Daystar

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Daystar.  Thanks to our loyal core of over 200 volunteers, we have a very small paid staff and were able to devote 95% of our income last year to program services.

We need volunteers every weekday and for special events.  You can donate your time and talents at the Daystar Life Center or Thrift Shoppe a few hours a month, a day or more a week, or for a one-time event.  We welcome back our “snowbird” volunteers whenever they’re in town.  We can accommodate your schedule!

You’re never too old or too young to help at Daystar.  There are opportunities for high school and college students to perform rewarding community service.  Our food distributions at Thanksgiving and Christmas are especially suitable for family participation.  Both working professionals and retired folks donate their time to Daystar.  No special skills are required, just the desire to help others.

At the Daystar Life Center volunteers greet clients at the front desk, sort the mail for clients who use our address to keep their mail secure, answer our phones, and perform general office duties.  Pantry workers are busy everyday receiving food, stocking shelves, and packing bags of food for hungry clients to take home.  If you have computer skills, you can help us track the services we provide to our clients.  If your passion is to help clients face-to-face we will train you to conduct the confidential interview that is the first step in assessing and meeting their needs.  The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program operates by appointment year-round in the evening and Saturday morning at the Daystar Life Center.  You can participate in the program by completing the IRS training.

Volunteers at the Daystar Thrift Shoppe accept, sort, and price donations; assist and check-out shoppers; maintain the appearance of the store; accompany the van driver on pickups and deliveries; and research the price of unusual items to be sold in the store or on eBay.

In addition to our ongoing volunteer opportunities, special needs at any time are listed in our monthly newsletter, The Beacon, and online at VolunteerMatch.org.

Hour-long information sessions for prospective volunteers are held the 3rd Tuesday of every month at Daystar Life Center at 1:30 pm.  Call the Development & Communications Office at 727.498.8794 to reserve a space.  Join our family of compassionate and committed volunteers!

The experience of a volunteer who helped distribute food at Thanksgiving. . .

“One of the seniors came up and grabbed me by the arm, clasping both her hands around my upper arm. The elderly woman looked me directly in the eye and said, ‘I want to thank you and thank Daystar for being here and for giving us this food. If it weren’t for you, I would not be having a lovely Thanksgiving meal.’ I was reminded how truly blessed I am to be able to offer my time to help people like this woman.”
